How to Choose your Wedding Flowers
When it comes to wedding flowers, we get it, it’s personal. You’ve probably been dreaming of this day for years and apart from the dress, the flowers are one of the most eye-catching, visual wow parts of the day. So, you want them to be right. To feel like you, tell your story and be all-round gorgeous. But, how do you get from an idea to the actual reality of flowers on your wedding day? There’s a few things to consider before you start talking to a floral designer to ensure you get the most out of your consult and that your florist understands your vision.
Think abut your colour palette and overall vibe or feeling
Colour is one of the first things we see, so it is important. Colour has impact, it helps create the mood and set the tone. If you think about colour palettes you love and the general vibe you want to portray, it is often a better place to start than the type of flowers you want. It gives your floral designer freedom to suggest a range of options without being limited by a single flower choice. Wild and dramatic? Pastel and feminine? Rustic autumn? Classic white elegance? Brainstorm some words that you feel best sums up the colours and feelings that will make your wedding day sing.
Be aware of the season
At Blossom and Blaze Floral, we work with the gorgeousness of each season. We use local flowers so we use flowers that grow naturally in each season. If there is a flower you just must have, consider getting married when it is in season. If there is a time of year that you have always dreamed of being married, be open to the flowers that are around at that time. This way you will get the absolute best that the season has to offer. Flowers that grow in the season will be the best quality, the most vibrant colours and be fresher and will last better than those imported or stored. Trust your florist to choose the loveliest of blooms from the season to fit your colour palette and feel.
Decide on your budget
Share your budget with your floral designer. Typically, wedding flowers are 10-20% of the overall wedding budget. Being open with your budget means that your florist can make the best suggestions and give you realistic options. They can also suggest the best value design elements and those that will give you the most impact.
Jot down any ‘must nots’ and any preferences
Do you absolutely love peonies? (we all do!) Or is the scent an important factor? Can’t stand orange? Or the thought of spikey textures is just too much? Let your floral designer know any likes or dislikes you may have so they can work around these to make sure they factor those things in when coming up with your design. It doesn’t mean you will get peonies (they are only around for such. a. short. time.) but your florist can suggest other flowers that are just as magical and will give a similar vibe.
Choose a floral designer you trust
Look at reviews, their work and the overall style of your florist. But, also make sure that you and your florist connect. Are you understanding each other? Do you get each other, and do your ethical, stylistic and general vibe align? It is important to trust your florist, be able to ask questions, and to chat through any ideas or concerns. When you know that your florist understands your vision, and you feel comfortable, it is then you can sit back and relax and know your floral designs are in safe hands. We offer tips, advice and suggestions as needed as we work through the design process to ensure you feel comfortable.
